SoundMapp brings together aspects of participatory design, space syntax, sound and museum studies through a mobile interface. We explore alternative user experience in relation to the museum space and the exhibits through an interactive mobile application. The first stage of the project involved the development of a desktop app in collaboration with Tom Joyce for experimenting with a range of sound mappings to architectural plans, and the possible positions of the user in space. Building upon Kali Tzortzi’s research on spatial accessibility we analyze museum spaces using the Depthmap software. Our example is using the floor plans of the Museum of Modern Art in Edinburgh as model. We reconsider the sound mappings based on the spatial accessibility analyses and take a spectral approach.
More details on this project can be found in our article SoundMapp: Participatory Design in Museum Space.
